So your cruise departs from Port Canaveral — or maybe you just got off one — and you've got a day to fill. Good news: you're in the right place. Most people don't realize that Florida's Space Coast has a lot more going on than the cruise terminal, and a layover day here is genuinely one of the better ones you can have at any port in Florida.

We're locals. We work and create right here in Cape Canaveral, about 15 minutes from the port. Here's how we'd spend the day.

Start at Jetty Park

You can't get closer to the action than Jetty Park Beach and Campground, right next to the cruise terminal. It's a great first stop. Watch the ships come and go, walk the pier, grab a coffee, and get your bearings. If you're killing time before boarding, this is the move.

Before you hit the beach, fuel up first. Good Neighbor Cafe is a locally owned coffee shop in Cape Canaveral worth knowing about. It's right next door to The Jewelers Workshop and exactly the kind of spot you'd want to find on a layover day.

Head to Cocoa Beach

About 10 to 15 minutes down A1A is Cocoa Beach, and it's worth the short drive. The Cocoa Beach Pier, established in 1962, is a Space Coast landmark featuring restaurants, bars, shops, fishing, and live entertainment daily. It's the kind of place that feels like Florida is supposed to feel. Walk it, grab lunch, rent a board if you're feeling it.

While you're there, Ron Jon Surf Shop is right nearby and worth a wander even if you're not buying anything. It's a Florida institution.

Do Something You Can Only Do Here

Here's where most layover itineraries get it wrong. They fill the day with things you could do anywhere. The Space Coast has a few experiences that are genuinely one of a kind.

Watch a rocket launch. If your timing lines up, this is the kind of thing people talk about for years. Cape Canaveral is one of the best places in the world to watch rocket launches, and launches are visible right from the beach. Check the schedule before you come.

Grab Lunch or Dinner at The Cove

The Cove is Port Canaveral's waterfront dining and entertainment district. Great spot for fresh seafood and live music, and it's close enough to the terminal that you're never far from where you need to be. Rusty's Seafood and Oyster Bar is a local favorite.

If You Have More Time

Kennedy Space Center offers an immersive experience into space exploration. You can walk among massive rockets, take part in a simulated shuttle launch, and dine with a real astronaut. Plan at least half a day if you go. It's worth it, especially if you've never been.

The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in North America, and guided kayak tours are a beautiful way to experience it, especially if bioluminescence is active, which peaks June through September.
